Aging is a natural process but not without its challenges. Families need to prepare for expected and unexpected events.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EXPECTED EVENTS AS WE AGE?
- Vision loss
- Hearing loss
- Mobility loss
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE UNEXPECTED EVENTS THAT COULD OCCUR?
- Cognitive decline
- Stroke
- Heart
These are often not cataclysmic but can be “mini” in scope. Look for changes in behaviors: memory, energy, diet, etc.
SO WHAT ACTION STEPS CAN A FAMILY TAKE TO BE PREPARED?
- Talk. Talk.
- Parents: Are our finances in order? Do we feel financially secure or not? Have we considered housing alternatives? Are healthcare providers and services in order? Is my Estate plan in order? i.e. have I named a Power of Attorney or trustee to help me manage my affairs if needed?
- Family: If a senior parent has not pre-planned and communicated, then other family members should talk and plan as best as possible to minimize surprises and family stress or tension.
