To enhance the physical and psychological quality of life for wounded Veterans, Smoky Mountain Service Dogs provides custom-trained mobility assistance service dogs at no cost to the Veteran.
SMSD serves the entire state of Tennessee and portions of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia. SMSD is an all-volunteer organization (with the exception of training staff and facility manager) and is funded by contributions from private individuals, groups, corporations and grants.
The estimated cost to acquire, train, provide health care, feed and place a mobility assistance service dog is in the $20,000 – $25,000 range.
Veterans receive the service dog at no cost. Additionally, they are provided with training and a full package of items needed for owning a service dog such as crate, bed, one-month food supply food/water bowls, grooming supplies, dog bed, and toys.
